the last time, baby,
Music 0:35
we back and we back and we back and we back. Do,
Leaha Crawford 0:44
hey, hey, hey, hey, All right, y'all it is, oh my god, it's October. We're in the fourth it is cool outside, yes, and I can How you feeling. It's,
Julian Rosado 0:57
it's getting cold. It's getting cold. It is, it is. I know every time, just some part of the year, like when you step outside, it always surprises me.
Leaha Crawford 1:07
Why does it surprise you? Just tell me why it surprises you. Because of
Julian Rosado 1:11
the weather. You always, always be, like, so hot and warm, and then you step outside like the weather is changing. That's odd. The weather is shaking. I should have to put on a coat.
Leaha Crawford 1:24
Well, you, well, you should. I mean, well, have a coat in the car, not all the time. Well, okay. Well, I just want to make it in the middle of the desert. So I am on my way. We are having a woman's wellness summit today at Cambridge. So what we're doing is we are we have guest speakers, workshops. We're doing electronic recycling and shredding, so if you have some documents that you need to have shredded, we are shredding those documents on the spot at Cambridge community center. So it is the ladies of Alpha Kappa. Alpha Sorority Incorporated theta theta omega chapter. I am actually a moderator on one of the panels, so I am excited. Oh yeah. So when I leave here, I am going over to the woman's wellness Summit. It starts at 10, from 10 until two. Okay, yeah. So I'm going to be there with my bells and whistles on y'all, where is it at Cambridge community center? So it's Cambridge, is like Flamingo and Cambridge, so it's not that far from the station. I can just leave here, and I can go over there, and I can sit and I can no shred some Well, I got, I forgot the documents. I didn't bring the documents. All right, so maybe I need to run home first to go get the documents so I can shred documents. The good thing is, is that if you have computer electronics in your home that are just sitting there, right? Because we all have electronics that are just sitting there. This is an opportunity to clean out the house, because one year, I think I had about 30 monitors and a whole bunch of hard drives. I loaded them in the back of the car, I dropped them off, and there we go.
Julian Rosado 2:53
All I have to shred is pictures of me and my ex so
Leaha Crawford 2:57
and then there's that All right, okay, so,
Julian Rosado 2:59
okay, it's everything we're shredding. Well, if you
Leaha Crawford 3:03
feel like, if you feel the need, please come and they will shred them right in front of you. Okay, so you can go through the process, so you won't cry while you're going through it. So today, you want to know what, Julian, I missed you last week, and I needed, needed the humor. I needed the humor. So today we have some special guest in the studio with us again, the Salvation Army of Southern Nevada. I have Major Kyle Smith and Michelle sensor, the PR and community engagement. Hi, Michelle. Hi, hi Major Kyle. How you there? Good one. What y'all doing? How's it
Kyle Smith 3:36
going? We're just hanging with you, and I'm just wondering how you had 30 monitors in your house?
Leaha Crawford 3:43
No, it was at the office. Okay, so at the office, you know, over time, when you are purchasing new monitors, and no one tells you, when you purchase new mountain, what do you do with the old monitor? You have the box, you throw the box away. So over time, and then I had a few girlfriends that, over the years, have closed, had closed businesses down. So they're like, Well, can I can I put because I have an extra office? Okay, y'all have never been on no so my office is on the corner of six and Clark, 431 South Sixth Street. We have one of the houses. So in the house, there's two offices, conference room, I got a Zen room, and then there's a storage area in the back as a well, as well as a garage that has even additional stuff in there. I need to find out if they can do a copier, because I got two copiers in there that need to be, that need possibly to be shredded. And over the years, just collecting. I've been down there for 15 years. So people, you know, Leah, can you hold this? Leah, can you store this? Sure you know what the space is there. We don't use it. And I looked one day, I was how you get 15, and my girlfriend said, you know, you can go ahead and take those, and you can take those. He you can bring those there. And I did two years ago. I loaded everything. It took two trips in the car, and my sororities were sitting there. They were like, Leah, where'd you get this stuff? I. Don't, don't ask any questions, and I won't, I'm not gonna lie. I have no idea where we got them from, but we are going to get rid of them today. And I did, and they took them like they can't shred that stuff in front of you, but they can documents and all the other things. So they shred documents. But they did. They took off all of the computer equipment and what they couldn't take a friend of mine had a dumpster not that far away, and he's like, just throw the rest of the stuff in there, because and I just felt good. I purged the stuff, and it had been sitting there for years. So just something to think about. But on to the Salvation Army, because it is almost kettle time, right? It's the holiday season is coming. Yeah, the kettle bells will be ringing. Michelle, talk to me about what's going on. What you got coming
Michelle Smith 5:45
up? Well, as you know, we're in the middle of our Angel Tree registration. Okay, so that started October 1. We spoke about it last time. So that's open. So you know, Southern Nevada, Salvation Army, Southern nevada.org, same, same one. And then our
Leaha Crawford 6:04
slow down when you say that, though, because you know, okay, come on, slow down. Salvation Army, Salvation Army, Southern nevada.org.org, Okay, now let's but, but no, let's talk about it again. Because the Angel Tree. What is the Angel Tree?
Michelle Smith 6:18
So Angel Tree program is our toy distribution for the families of Southern Nevada, okay, so during the months of October, November, we gather toys, write donations, things like that, and then we distribute them to families that register their children in December.
Leaha Crawford 6:38
Okay, and what are the requirements for registration. So requirements
Michelle Smith 6:41
for registration are, you're a Nevada residence, proof of children that is in the parents custody, or grandma, aunt, as long as they're in your custody, and that's going to be children from newborn to 12 years old.
Leaha Crawford 6:54
I love it. Now we talked about this. People start the
Michelle Smith 6:58
registration but don't complete it, correct. And if you don't complete it, I believe after we try to, like, give people some time, you know, because things happen. You know, you're doing you're busy. Everybody's busy and stuff, but we do have to purge those and and, you know, take them out of the system because they're holding a spot. And so we got to let people register and finish the registration. So we usually give about 10 days before we put before we purge them. Yeah. So it's like 10 working days because, you know, it's working, right? Yeah. So it gives you plenty of time if you're waiting for something, or you can't find a birth certificate or something like that, he can come back to it. But, you know, just try to finish it up so that way you can get registered. That's good.
Leaha Crawford 7:45
I love it. I love it, all right, because major college, this is your first holiday season in Southern Nevada, yay.
Kyle Smith 7:50
It surely is. And I just want to go with Julian. It is getting cold outside. Yeah, it's feeling like Christmas, you know, starting to feel like Christmas,
Leaha Crawford 7:58
yeah, and looking like it's gonna look like Christmas. You what? I really wish it was snow. You know, you can go to the snow. That's the beautiful thing about Vegas, because we have snow capped mountains in a
Michelle Smith 8:09
minute, and there's already snow on the mountains. Did
Kyle Smith 8:11
you really see it? That's not see it, yeah. But that explains a lot, really. That explains
Leaha Crawford 8:17
so you can go to the mountain, you can go get in the snow. Wow. I prefer not to have snow. I am okay with the cool weather.
Michelle Smith 8:24
I love snow. You love snow too. Love snow. Yeah, love it. Oh, so you are miserable in the summertime. I love it. No, I love the summer too. Like the summer, okay, good, yeah, I'm all seasons. Kind of go, yeah.
Julian Rosado 8:36
No hot cocoa, yeah,
Michelle Smith 8:38
I really do. I love going to the ski the ski resorts. Yeah,
Julian Rosado 8:42
we're in the same boat. I don't know where you're at.
Michelle Smith 8:44
Yeah, I don't ski anymore, though. No, ski anymore. No, no, I can't ski. Can't ski anymore,
Leaha Crawford 8:50
okay, all right, no, I'm not that girl. No, no, Give me. Give me. I like this weather, but I'm okay with it without the snow. I like I like the weather. I'm okay without the snow. All right, red kettles, the red kettles, the ringing of the red kettles. When are we going to start that
Kyle Smith 9:05
we are going to start. It's going to be a slow, sort of blending in bringing it up, sort of a start, because some stores will let us start earlier than others. So there could be some out as early as the first of November and but I think the main wave will start around mid November, just before Thanksgiving, and then just after Thanksgiving tends to be there, okay, when it all goes full bore, you know, and giving people an opportunity to enjoy the Christmas
Leaha Crawford 9:32
season. So when I think about that though, so let me ask you this, who are there? Just volunteers? Well, how do you volunteer
Michelle Smith 9:40
to be a part of that. Yeah, you can volunteer to ring a bell. We ring six days a week. We don't ring on Sundays, okay? We usually start depending on the store. Like, you know, grocery stores usually start around nine o'clock. Department stores, you know, like, geez, pennies and Walmart stuff start around 10, okay? It usually goes into about five or six. So you have all day. We love our volunteers to come,
Kyle Smith 10:06
yeah, and you can sign up online. You can go to our website and find a volunteer opportunity, but you can also just phone up as well, okay? And we can put you through and sort you out that way as well. So either way, we love people that want to volunteer make a difference. You know? I mean, it makes Christmas, to me getting out there and just doing something, you know,
Leaha Crawford 10:23
I love it. So if you would like more information, or if you would like to get involved, you can contact 702-870-4430
Leaha Crawford 10:33
Correct, yes, again, 702-870-4430 and I also see that you have a register to ring.com
Michelle Smith 10:43
register to ring.com you can go on there, and you can register. And I'll show you all the locations. Show
Leaha Crawford 10:49
you all the locations and everything. Yeah. Now ringing a bell, you have the best story about the competition. Can you share?
Kyle Smith 10:56
Okay, so yes. Now you got me all excited. So I was once the world record holder of consistent, continuous bell ringing. Wow, I did it. I did. I think it was 36 hours one year and then another year I did like 52 hours.
Julian Rosado 11:13
But you rung the bell straight for 36 hours? Indeed, I did. Do you get arthritis or
Kyle Smith 11:21
no, no. But here was the thing, I don't know. I don't know. I'm not sure whether I should share this on here or not. But the rules of the rules of the graphic, no graphic salvation. How could I put it? You had to keep bringing so I had to keep was the phrase I use, I can't come up with a phrase. I can't remember it, and if I get it wrong, it would be bad. But basically, no matter what I was doing, whether I was in the store, outside the store, ringing the bell, or if I had to have a little rest stop, I had to keep ringing. I had to keep ringing. So you just had to keep on. I just had to keep that ringing ringing. That was fun. And you know what I did? Another one we had. This was really a lot of fun. I don't know if there's anyone out there to want. Anyone out there that wants to do this, but I did a we did a beauty, and the Beast ring off. It was at a Walmart, and it was two doors. And so the beauty was the city beauty queen, and she got the state beauty queen, and they all the beauty queens were down there, and I was the beast at the other end. And we just, we had a fun we had so much fun. And I'm not going to say the statements I made, but it was statements I made, but it was all that she said that politically incorrect these days. Back then, you could get away with it nowadays, you know how it is, but it was just, you know, it was just fun competition, and a lot of people came out and supported us. It was just a lot of fun, and we raised a lot of money to help people and need that Christmas. So it was, that was, the whole point of it,
Leaha Crawford 12:40
and you have fun doing it. Oh, love doing it. Love doing Yeah. All right, so that is the red kettles beginning November 1 again for more information, or if you would like to get involved, 702-870-4430 again, 702-870-4430
Leaha Crawford 13:01
we talked about Angel Tree. We talked about the requirements. What else is going on? I know there's something else. I know it's always something
Michelle Smith 13:08
drive. Yeah, food drive. Thanksgiving is coming up. We get we distribute boxes, you know, for the Thanksgiving meals. So we're in the process of doing food drives,
Leaha Crawford 13:20
food drives. And you have multiple, five locations around the valley, right?
Michelle Smith 13:25
November 1 on November 1, November 1, we'll have five locations in collaborative with Albertsons bonds, okay? And so there'll be five different locations, and you'll be able to donate the food all right. So
Leaha Crawford 13:37
let's talk about the locations you have that in front of you, kind of ready.
Michelle Smith 13:41
So let's talk about one of one of the bonds is, let me put my glasses on. I can't see anything. So Albertsons at tanaya Craig, the Albertsons at Blue Diamond in Decatur, the Albertsons at Desert Inn and Pecos. And Albertsons at Charleston Town Center, and then the one bonds at Cedar tree and East horizon in Henderson. Okay,
Leaha Crawford 14:07
so when? So basically just a bag of food. And then, or
Michelle Smith 14:13
so, we have a list of the Thanksgiving items, so stuffing, gravy, things like that. And so we're just, we're going to try to get those boxes filled with thanksgiving items that people are more accustomed with, but anything, any donation. Of course, we're, you know, we're very appreciative of
Leaha Crawford 14:31
and I appreciate that, so we are. And again, let's go over those locations again, in case somebody might have missed it.
Michelle Smith 14:36
Okay, so on November 1, from nine to four, we will be at the Albertsons at tenea and Craig, the Albertsons at Blue Diamond in Decatur, the Albertsons at Desert Inn and Pecos, and the Albertsons at Charleston and Town Center and the vaughans at Cedar tree and East horizon in Henderson.
Leaha Crawford 14:56
Now there, will there be people out there, or will there be. Be
Michelle Smith 15:00
yes. So yeah. So we're going to be collaborating with some media that will be out there at all five locations. Are there'll be staff members out there, volunteers that have already signed up, civic groups, youth groups, things like that, that are coming to volunteer. So it's going to be a fun day.
Leaha Crawford 15:20
Yeah, because Thanksgiving is huge. It is, it is huge. I remember, I guess, my very first Thanksgiving on a board at Salvation Army. That's when we had the partnership with Zappos. Yes, it was absolutely amazing. It
Michelle Smith 15:33
was at the Raider station, an Allegiant, right?
Leaha Crawford 15:37
No, this before, no, this was downtown. So it was downtown, where the Zappos, where the old city hall building was, where the new Zappos building is, and they basically, one year just turned, well, they turned the whole, I guess, the four year area into distribution center, and then one year rained, so they turned the parking lot into a distribution center. Then for Christmas, they had a slide down the steps in the front. It was always, just always
Michelle Smith 16:04
amazing. Yeah, it was, it was pretty amazing. I mean, they used to get Cirque du Soleil involved, entertainment, yeah,
Leaha Crawford 16:11
it was definitely because the Salvation Army has an amazing footprint here in this community.
Kyle Smith 16:15
And that's, that's all great because it's, it creates it. But, you know, I can tell you, there's one story I got from Thanksgiving that, you know, there's some things that just blaze in your mind. And we're at a we're doing a distribution, and I'm just walking along, just saying hi to people and welcoming them. And this one guy with tears in his eyes just said, Thank you so much. Because now I don't have to explain to my kids on Thanksgiving while we're just eating some canned food, and you know, but the tears in his eyes as he said that, you know you, it moves you. It really moves you. And it's funny, because it wasn't a big, long conversation. Was short, but I remember that probably more than any other conversation I've had. It around Thanksgiving, just because of the look he had in his eyes and just the great gratitude, the gratitude and it was all because the community came out and supported so that that we could help. You know what? I mean? It was a beautiful thing,
Leaha Crawford 17:08
because there's no reason for people to go home.
Michelle Smith 17:10
No, not on it. It's so gratifying to hand that box of food to the family and they come in and get that box of food. And so even supplementing their meal, it's great supplement them. Yeah, well, and we'll try to help as many people as we can. So that's, that's our motto, is that we we do as much as we can with what we have. Yeah,
Leaha Crawford 17:28
okay, so let's go back. So let's, let's go back to the Angel Tree. So give me the history of Angel Tree. Do you notice? I mean,
Kyle Smith 17:34
um, well, Angel Tree, it goes way back. I mean, way back, as far back as I can, well, even further back than I can remember. I know that's a long way, but we're going way back in history. In fact, let me tell you another story. This one was amazing. A little old, older individual in a care home, and came up to me one day, and I was just visiting some some people that were supporters, and she goes Captain when I, when I, when I go to be in glory, I'm leaving you a boatload of money to help people. And I said, why? And she goes, because you guys gave me an orange. And of course, I started smiling, like, I'm not sure how the two go together, doesn't really make any sense. And she could see that I was laughing, you know? And she goes, No, no, you didn't get it, you know? It was the depression. We had absolutely nothing, absolutely nothing. And you guys, the Salvation Army, wherever it was, gave me for Christmas, for Christmas, a fresh, juicy orange. And I never forgot that. And I just want you to be able to keep doing that, not necessarily giving oranges, but helping people giving at their greatest need, when they're feeling depressed, where the family's got nothing, when they're just giving that little gift, that little something. And so Salvation Army has obviously been doing this for a long, long time, and but I will never forget, because I felt sort of put in my place, in a way, you know, but you know, it's what a beautiful thing, something, a little act of kindness, can last an entire lifetime. This lady was well into her 80s, and she was talking when she was like, five or six, and she had not forgotten that moment.
Leaha Crawford 19:16
And that's type of impact. That's how the Salvation Army has went on this community,
Michelle Smith 19:21
right, right, yeah. And, you know, with the kettles and with Angel Tree. I mean, those are we hear stories like that, you know, like manger just said all the time where I was five years old, I remember hearing the bells when I was walking with my grandmother downtown, or something like that. So it's part of Christmas tradition as well, for a lot of people, because it's not just here in Southern Nevada. It's all over the world,
Leaha Crawford 19:45
all over the world, right? Because you know, you know when you hear those bells, you know who it is exactly, no matter where you when you hear the bell, yep, that Salvation Army. That's the Salvation Army.
Kyle Smith 19:55
I met this, this billionaire, actually, and he goes, I first. Gave my first where I learned to give charity was at the Salvation Army kettle. Okay, what are you talking about? He goes, Well, my mum, when we were really young in Los this was in Los Angeles, she gave me a nickel to put in the kettle. And I'm like, thinking, that's a coke and an ice cream, not gonna put that in the kettle. Goes, you put that in that kettle. And he goes, I did it. But he goes, it was there that I learned. And he goes, my mom told me, you know, you got to think of others you've, you know, we may not have a lot, but we've got a more than a lot of others. And so he just was, he said, but that's where he got his philanthropy from. And this guy has given a lot, not just to the salvation, but to a lot of organizations. And he's one of those guys that said it give away all of his money when he when he dies, or before so but, you know, he learned it from just being a kid and his money
Leaha Crawford 20:50
making. Do you know what I could do with that?
Kyle Smith 20:55
He was very clear about what he could do with that.
Leaha Crawford 21:01
No, but that's but those are the amazing stories that you hear in almost everything that the Salvation Army does, when we talk about the meals in the kitchen, when we talk about the A, R, C, the adult Recovery Center, when we talk about just the holiday season and just being able to just do the work and then watch people that are grateful that there is someone there that is thinking about them during the season,
Kyle Smith 21:26
I can't tell you wearing my my uniform, which makes me stand out. I don't always want to stand up, but nevertheless, I can't tell you how many people come up and say, you literally saved my life. I was an addiction, or you saved my kids life. Well, you know, it's just amazing. And so I get all this, you know, nice compliments for nothing I did, but somebody in the Salvation Army somewhere did something good that really made a difference in somebody's life. And to me, that's I'm asking myself, What am I doing that someone will come up to someone else one day and say, Hey, thank you, you guys. Did you know?
Leaha Crawford 21:59
No, you, from what I've seen, everyone is genuinely kind, genuinely kind, and they see you where you are, and they don't judge you for where you are, and they love you through it, and they keep loving you through it, and keep loving you through it, and they beat you up with the love to one day, you're just like, all right, I'm loved. Let me try to do something different. And that's, I guess that's a good feeling, because I don't know how many of us get that in other places. All right, so to volunteer again, Michelle, let's give them that information, that contact information.
Michelle Smith 22:32
So register to ring.com for about, excuse me, red kettles, or the Salvation Army Southern nevada.org, you get all the information on that website, and then what's the phone number? Phone number is 702-870-4430 All right, say it again. 702-870-4430
Leaha Crawford 22:56
now let me ask you this, how big is the impact from the community in in delivering these services. I mean, is it a huge impact from the community? I mean, I mean, I know the giving, but even people volunteering, yes.
Michelle Smith 23:09
I mean, I get a lot of calls. I get calls every day, okay, during the week, you know, even on the weekends and so, you know, I get my pick up those calls. I always asking, how can they can help? How can they get involved? How they can receive the services? So, so what will steer you, you know, when you call that number, just, you know, let them know what you're looking for, and then they'll send you to the right department.
Kyle Smith 23:33
What you know? One of the things being at the Salvation Army, I would say, you can see people in the absolute worst moments, and you see people in the absolute best moments. So you've got those that have lost everything, burnt all their bridges, and desperate for help. And then you've got those that are like, I just want to help. I just want to do something good. You know, I don't know what to do. You know, what? ON PHONE Salvation Army, I know they can help me do something good. And so, you know, they get a hold of Michelle, and she directs them where they need to go, but or me, I do
Kyle Smith 24:06
it too. You
Kyle Smith 24:08
just make you just make it fun. I try to make fun. You enjoy life, no matter what it is, no matter what you're going through, look for that silver lining, and life will be so much better. And it's those people that are coming and they're volunteering, and they're doing something, and they are making a difference. And you'd be surprised how many people volunteer that don't have a lot. There are people that volunteer that have a lot, and there's a lot that come and say, you know, I'm just so grateful for that, for what I've been given. I want to give back. And those are really happy, good people That's
Julian Rosado 24:38
amazing. Yeah, you volunteer, yeah, I'm gone. Okay, got
Leaha Crawford 24:41
it. I'll see you. Ringing the bell
Leaha Crawford 24:45
before. Never done it before. No.
Michelle Smith 24:48
So fun. Yeah, it's really a lot of fun. You can make it you can make it a day, you can make it a couple of hours. Bring music seeing dress up as Santa.
Julian Rosado 24:56
I do. I do like to guys wearing a Santa Claus hat.
Kyle Smith 25:00
And, yeah, yeah, you can, yeah, you've got the mustache, yeah. Have you got Santa Claus hat? No, yeah, that'd be great. I want to hear him sing. I mean, Julian this. I mean, this could be a breakout moment.
Michelle Smith 25:12
Volunteers. Volunteers get very creative. They bring their their French horn, they bring their violin. I mean, you
Kyle Smith 25:21
know, I think we'd be great. We could, like, have an elf competition this year, and you could be the chief elf, and everyone's got to be Julian, you know, if you can look better than Julian, see, they have some sort of, some sort of prize, you know, I don't know. What do you think?
Julian Rosado 25:33
I don't know. I think probably only one out there wearing a suit. I think this is the executive Salvation Army. I think this is like $10 above here.
Kyle Smith 25:48
You know, all I want to say is that your elf outfit would be awesome outfit.
Michelle Smith 25:55
I have an elf dress. I do so you and
Leaha Crawford 25:59
Michelle, yeah, one two, yeah and two elves, and we will see what happened. I like
Leaha Crawford 26:09
that weekend. Yeah,
Julian Rosado 26:10
I have a VIP line.
Leaha Crawford 26:15
I love it. So as always, this is becoming to the end of our show. So I want to say thank you. Well, thank you for having us. Thank you for coming. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for all of the information. Because again, got to get the information out there so people know that assistance is available. But one more time, let's go over so for more information, to ring the kettles, I mean, to ring the bells and to volunteer give us ringing the bells is which one register
Michelle Smith 26:45
ring, register to ring.com say it again. Register to ring.com
Leaha Crawford 26:49
Okay, and then what is, well, the phone number is for everything you give us the phone number.
Michelle Smith 26:54
Yeah, yeah, the phone number, 70287044301 more time, 702-870-4430,
Leaha Crawford 27:04
and then let's go over the locations on November 1, where we are going to do all of the November 1 is where you
