Julian Rosado 0:47
to Growth and Grace, where we grow, where we explore conversations and help grow personally, professionally, and help help our people as leaders.

Leaha Crawford 1:02
Hi, I'm Leah Crawford. This is Julian Rosado. I love it, and we are glad you are joining us today, y'all. Yeah, I'm testing Julian out. I'm making him do the intro, y'all, so bear with us, because he's gonna work through it, because we want to get him cool and comfortable on the radio. Julian, it's been over a year, you know that, right?

Julian Rosado 1:21
No, it hasn't.

Leaha Crawford 1:22
Yeah, it's been over a year, really. If you look at it, yeah, it's been over a year. Can you believe it,

Julian Rosado 1:27
man? I, I still look young. He still looks okay. Don't let me hear older. Well, young too.

Leaha Crawford 1:33
Hey, thank you. I appreciate that. Thank you for the compliment. Well, today's conversation is timely, because what we're going to do, we're going to talk about, we've talked about just personal development, but now we have someone in the studio with us, and she's going to talk about coaching and mentoring, she's going to tell us about some new things that are going on that are coming up in the Las Vegas Valley, so if you know an entrepreneur or you know someone that wants to be an entrepreneur, today's show is going to truly benefit them, because there are some resources that are coming up in the near future that they can benefit from, because this entrepreneurial journey is not something where you can go alone, you really need to go with somebody, have somebody, somebody, somebody talking. All right, Brenda, what would Brenda? Welcome, welcome back.

Brenda Bryant 2:17
Thank you very much. How's this great day? I am, you know, what I'm ready for to eat, but other than that, I'm fine. All right, so

Leaha Crawford 2:24
first of all, reintroduce yourself to our listeners. Tell us a little bit about who is Brenda Bryant.

Brenda Bryant 2:30
Well, my name is Brenda Bryant, and I am currently an instructor with UNR Extension in the department that handles small business education, so our focus is very, very pointed. It is to build and grow successful businesses.

Leaha Crawford 2:50
All right, so when you talk about build and growing success, successful businesses for the state, because as you and our University of Nevada, Reno, and you guys are located here. We are,

Brenda Bryant 3:00
yes, we're located right behind North Las Vegas City Hall.

Leaha Crawford 3:04
Okay, so when you're talking about building and growing businesses, what does your, what do your clients look like?

Brenda Bryant 3:13
Your next door neighbor, the person down the street, somebody you pass on the street, they look like anybody and everybody. The difference is they have a dream,

Leaha Crawford 3:24
to have a dream,

Brenda Bryant 3:25
and so some of them are coming, not not as business owners, but I want to be. Some are coming as I just started, and I don't know what to do next, and some are coming as I've been in business for a long time, and oh my gosh, I didn't know it was going to be this difficult.

Leaha Crawford 3:43
Okay,

Brenda Bryant 3:44
I don't know what my next step is going to be. I don't know how to grow as a business. So we have a right wide variety of people, and we have a wide variety of industries that they cover. Some people have businesses now. I didn't even know you could do that as a business, and as one business owner told me years ago when I was out consulting, he said, How do you think you get the stuff you get? Somebody had to think it up, somebody had to make it up, and somebody had to send it out. I'm like, Okay, put me in my place, put you in your place. Hey, but I guess that keeps you curious. It should keep you not only curious, but it should keep you wanting to know where these places are. Who are these people? Where does this stuff come from? Now, I don't go to the store and just pick up something because it's there. I want to know where this came from. I want to know how it got here. I want to know the process that people do to make themselves business owners, because there may be a glitch in the system that I look at and go, you know, I've got an idea that could make that better. It's like, what, oh. Ovi used to say in Ogilvy and Mather, find a need and fill it,

Leaha Crawford 5:05
and fill the need. Let me ask you this, though: Is there a common thread that I mean, just some foundational things being a business owner, that you should know?

Brenda Bryant 5:16
The first thing is, do a self-assessment, what makes you happy? So, I start out with, and I've done this for years. I had it done to me at UCLA. I hated the lady that did it, and now I do it to everybody else.

Leaha Crawford 5:31
Okay,

Brenda Bryant 5:32
but it is, and they love you, so yeah, sometimes. But when you wake up in the morning, before your feet hit the ground and you think about what you have to do for the day, does it make you smile? If the answer is no, you need to find something that makes you smile.

Leaha Crawford 5:55
Say that again.

Brenda Bryant 5:57
When you wake up in the morning, before your feet hit the floor and you think about what you have to do for the day. Does it make you smile?

Leaha Crawford 6:07
Well, some things you can't get by, like you got to take the kids to school, you have to do certain things that might not make you smile, but you can't do anything about that. But we're talking about the job.

Brenda Bryant 6:15
Well, I'll just talk about the job that I have now. Okay, so I'm an instructor at UNR Extension. They're working me like a crazy person. I will say that loud and clear. I love what I do.

Leaha Crawford 6:27
Mike, you hear that, Mike. Mike, if you listen to the show,

Julian Rosado 6:31
what inspired this journey?

Brenda Bryant 6:34
I am not a planner, and most of this is by hook or crook, I did. I can teach people how to plan, but it doesn't mean that I do it. I can teach people how to organize, doesn't mean that I do it. So I started out in college. I started out as an English major, and the instructor said to me, "You can't write. So I wish I could find her, because I could send her a couple of books that I did, and then I moved to write, okay?

Leaha Crawford 7:08
Right, she

Brenda Bryant 7:08
said, you don't, you don't excite me, you don't, you don't keep me involved, you don't make me want to. It's not that I couldn't write the words well, or the grammar was, so I have to add, the story wasn't, I don't

Leaha Crawford 7:21
mean to cut you off, but it's funny, because when our engineer, Wes, when you just said that, he just shook his head, because I can only imagine the comments that are going on in his head, because sometimes educators, when it's not, it's what you say to people that can be discouraging, but, and you, as a coach, but go ahead, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cut, no,

Brenda Bryant 7:39
that, that's okay, and then, so I switched over. I probably went to.. I'm thinking I went to four or five schools before I finally graduated. Okay, so as I said, there was no plan to this. Wow, so then I switched over to music, because I like music, and I.. and I, what I wanted to be trained to do music well. So I went into the music department. I went to audition at Ohio State University to the music department, and found out I got in, but I found out I got in too late because the paperwork didn't get done.

Brenda Bryant 8:16
And so, again, these are these are things that happen. Paperwork didn't get my mother worked at Ohio State University, she could have walked over and picked it

Julian Rosado 8:24
up,

Brenda Bryant 8:25
we didn't know there was paperwork to get done, and so, so that didn't happen, right, so then I ended up at an HBCU, and I did, I started out in the music department and found out the only way I was going to get to Carnegie Hall was to buy a ticket, so I thought, well, I guess I better learn how to do something, because I did not do anything. I knew how to type. Well, okay, you can type. I knew how to take shorthand. People don't even know what shorthand is. Okay, so there were things that I knew, but the technology was not growing, so I

Leaha Crawford 9:05
will say that some children's handwriting look like shorthand.

Brenda Bryant 9:07
Well, mine does too now, because the longer I'm on the computer, the worse my handwriting gets. I write out stuff, and then I look at it and go, what does this say? Jillian

Leaha Crawford 9:16
X, what is shorthand?

Julian Rosado 9:17
Yeah, what is shorthand? It is

Brenda Bryant 9:18
a series of symbols that were put together by this gentleman by the name of Greg G R E G G, and, and as people, what you were talking about phonics earlier.

Julian Rosado 9:32
Yeah,

Brenda Bryant 9:32
it's all phonics. It has nothing to do with how things spell, it has to do with how things are heard. Okay, so what you have to two things with shorthand, you have to do one is you have to listen carefully, and the second is you need to know how to spell, because now you have to take those symbols that you've written down and turn them into words.

Julian Rosado 9:55
Okay, okay,

Brenda Bryant 9:57
so when we, when we have a word that has a C and a sound. Sounds like an s, you put in the symbol for s, because that's what it sounds like,

Leaha Crawford 10:04
and if it's two, you will put in a number two, so whatever it is, it would be the number two. Yeah,

Julian Rosado 10:10
okay,

Brenda Bryant 10:10
so that, that's that's what that's what shorthand was, and honestly, that's actually how I got through college, was that I would go into my classes, there was no such thing as Zoom, there were no such things as computers. Okay, you had no.. there were paper and pencil people in the front of the room who were called the professors, and there were people sitting in the room who were called the students. And you came in with a notebook, and if you were smart, you came in with a notebook and a pencil, and not a pen, and I took all my notes in shorthand, and then I would go back to my room, and I would transcribe those out of shorthand into longhand, and that's how I learned how to do the things that they put in front of me.

Julian Rosado 10:55
Oh, wow,

Leaha Crawford 10:56
you had textbooks,

Julian Rosado 10:57
man,

Leaha Crawford 10:58
you had real live books, like going to the bookstore was a thing

Julian Rosado 11:01
you're talking to me, like I remember,

Leaha Crawford 11:05
no, because a lot of times, no, for real, you had real live textbooks, and especially as college students, you had a budget to buy books, yeah, every semester, yeah, and you, I mean, you should see the books, and you had to highlight the books and go back, because you had to take your notes back to the book to make sure that you didn't miss something. It was, it was, it was definitely an education journey.

Julian Rosado 11:26
Yeah,

Brenda Bryant 11:27
and one of the things that I, that's how you learned

Leaha Crawford 11:29
how to study,

Brenda Bryant 11:30
and one of the things I learned in high school was when you have your books, because in high school the books were given out to everybody, you couldn't write in them. Libraries hated me because I like to write in the notes, okay, I can't do that, so but in college you can bought the books, and so one of the things that I learned in high school was take the topic, the first topic that you see, and turn it into a question, and then you look through the subtopics, what's the answer to this question, turn that subtopic into a question, you keep turning the topics, the subject matters into questions until you get to the paragraphs and you find the answer to that question,

Leaha Crawford 12:12
because what we used to do, just to add on to that, is you had to learn how to answer questions too, like say when you're taking tests and things like that, so I mean, going to school, it was more than just learning, because I know I had to learn how to take a test, and in learning to take a test, it was reading a question forward, reading a question backwards, not not looking at the answers, but answering the question before you even look at the answers, and it definitely, it takes longer, it does take longer, but you possibly like, I tell people all the time, if a test is an hour and you only took 10 minutes, you probably didn't do that

Julian Rosado 12:47
well. Yeah,

Brenda Bryant 12:49
and it forced you to think, forces you to

Leaha Crawford 12:51
think. Yeah.

Julian Rosado 12:52
So, what industries do you see the most change in right now?

Brenda Bryant 12:58
That's kind of a hard question, because we work with so many industries here, here in Southern Nevada. Everybody's caught up in the restaurant industry and

Julian Rosado 13:11
hospitality, yeah,

Brenda Bryant 13:12
yeah, and hospitality too. What's happening with the restaurant industry is there are new restaurants that are coming out that are absolutely fantastic, and there are restaurants that are absolutely fantastic, who are losing, that's

Julian Rosado 13:25
their clientele, that's a very different business. And

Brenda Bryant 13:28
so, how do you balance what you have to offer to the community if the community isn't coming to you? How do you reach the community? Yeah,

Julian Rosado 13:38
okay,

Leaha Crawford 13:38
so I guess a common thread then will be marketing for whatever business

Brenda Bryant 13:41
it's marketing, it's getting out and talking to people, it's getting seen and known. The one of the things that I try to teach, and I'm not a marketing specialist, my specialty is, unfortunately, say it again, say it loud, I'm not

Leaha Crawford 13:58
counting, I'm proud, yes,

Brenda Bryant 14:01
but one of the things that I try to teach people from a marketing standpoint is that your most important marketing piece is that you do an excellent job for your customer. Your cut, let your customer go out and be your marketing department. You don't pay for a marketing department, you let your marketing department pay you. Your customers are coming to buy your products and services, and they're telling other people how great your products and services are. You can't ask for better marketing than that,

Leaha Crawford 14:30
but that's word of mouth. So, with all of the AI tools and all the other things, because you know AI is changing the way we do business, it is.

Leaha Crawford 14:37
It's changing the way that we do business. Are you seeing especially the younger business owners or people that want to be trying to use the AI tools?

Brenda Bryant 14:49
I am, and when people talk about doing a business plan, they will put information in, they let AI do the business plan for them. My problem is not that AI. I did the business plan. My problem is we need to use it as a tool, not at, not as the end product. Second thing is, we need to know what it says.

Julian Rosado 15:10
Yeah,

Brenda Bryant 15:11
when, if I'm, if I'm a business owner and I'm going to a bank and I'm asking a banker for money, the banker does not care what the paper says, the banker cares what, who I am, what I do, how I'm planning to run this business, and am I have I decided how to use this money effectively and efficiently?

Julian Rosado 15:34
No,

Brenda Bryant 15:35
that's not going to come out in an AI, you know. Then I got 27 pages of my of my business plan right here, so I can give it to the banker, and he'll, and so he'll say yes, and then the answer is no. First of all, it's not gonna read it, you're not gonna read

Julian Rosado 15:51
it.

Brenda Bryant 15:51
So, what if people who have money and want to share their money with you, what are they looking for? They want a summary of what you're gonna do. Who are you? What are you doing? How are you doing it? And they want to know that you know how to use their money effectively.

Julian Rosado 16:09
It is

Brenda Bryant 16:09
still their money until you pay it back with interest, with interest, with absolutely interest. Interest is the price you pay for using other people's money, OPM. And I have to be very careful to say O P M and not Opium, say it slow, slowly, a deliberate

Leaha Crawford 16:30
P M, right. Well, you're listening to Growth and Grace. I'm Leah Crawford.

Julian Rosado 16:35
This is Julie Messi, and

Leaha Crawford 16:36
we wanted to bring this conversation to you, because we know a lot of people want to be entrepreneurs, or when you are an entrepreneur, and just sometimes I know when you, when you're seasoned and you've been doing stuff for a long time, sometimes you forget to go back to the basics.

Brenda Bryant 16:50
When I was coaching, like I said, nobody ever called me in because things were going well, they only called me in because things hit the fan, right? So my first duty as a coach was to find their core. Why are you in this business? And it is never to make money, is never to make money. And I was.. I'll give you one example. I was talking to a gentleman, complete in his greasy clothes, and he's, he's working on cars, and I said to him, "Why are you in this business? And he says, "So I can take care of my family. Well, no, you're not. You can be an Amway distributor, a drug dealer, and you can make money. So you are, you are getting under cars, you are getting grease in your nails, you're getting your wife telling you that you're gonna take that stuff off before you walk into my house because of something else. Why are you in this business? He said, I love cars. I said, okay, now we can get to the core, and that's why I said, when people want to start a business, think about what brings you joy

Leaha Crawford 17:55
again. So, we're back to when you open up your eyes, what makes you smile?

Julian Rosado 18:01
So, people mostly use the word coaching and mentoring, they use it interchangeably. So, what's the difference?

Brenda Bryant 18:08
I'm not sure that there is, because people have used the word so interchangeably. I am a certified coach. I am certified through Harvard. I got the scars to prove

Julian Rosado 18:19
it,

Brenda Bryant 18:20
and part of my coaching program was how do you get good information from people so you can give them better information back, so I have to learn to, I had to learn to listen. I'm a, I'm also a certified trainer, and a trainer, I tell you what to do, and I expect you to do it. Okay, as a coach, I can't tell you what to do. I got to help you find what it is that you need to do, and give you the guidance and the understanding on how to get that done. So, I have to ask different questions, I have to delve in different places, I am not a therapist, so this is not about, you know, how do you save your marriage? It's not about that, but it is about how do you save your business. Yeah,

Julian Rosado 19:09
so

Brenda Bryant 19:10
I have to get back to their core, and they, and I have to bring them with me on the journey. They have to come back to that core, because it's not about money.

Leaha Crawford 19:20
Do you think that every business owner needs a coach slash mentor?

Brenda Bryant 19:24
Every business owner needs a support system. Not everybody can afford a coach. What we do at the university is that we try to get them what we call trusted advisors, and there are trusted advisors out there who have, if your interest is it, there is a trusted advisor resource that we have that we will connect you with that person to help you through that process, but the biggest problem is it needs to be trust. Trusted, and we live in a community of political angst with throughout the whole world right now, and we are teaching our young people and our older people to not to trust, and that's not a good thing. We have to go back to relying on people who have information that they can help us with, we need to be a trusted advisor, because there's stuff that we know that somebody else is looking for. There's stuff that somebody else knows that we're looking for. So that support system is extremely important. A lot of companies do go through coaches. Okay, a lot of companies do through go through consultants, because both the coach and a consultant are independent eyes. They're looking at this differently than you've looked at this forest for 12 years. You see this forest, you've seen the trees grow, but you never saw the flower over in the right hand corner. Okay, and so what does a coach see? First thing, coach sees what's different. Whoa, there's a flower over in the right-hand corner. Let's talk about that.

Leaha Crawford 21:10
Okay.

Brenda Bryant 21:10
Okay.

Leaha Crawford 21:11
All right. All right. So you have some things coming up. I would love to talk about it. Las Vegas business,

Brenda Bryant 21:21
large vision,

Leaha Crawford 21:22
large vision

Brenda Bryant 21:23
business networking mixer is turning 20 years old.

Leaha Crawford 21:27
Congrats, that's that's a long time,

Brenda Bryant 21:29
that's a long time, and that's, and their focus is very simple. It's kind of like us at the university, focus is growth and production for small business. We

Leaha Crawford 21:40
need to get them on here. I need to make a note. We need to get them on here to talk about it. Absolutely. So, what? So, what's the new offering? Because they have some new stuff down. Well,

Brenda Bryant 21:46
they now are working with the university.

Leaha Crawford 21:48
Okay,

Brenda Bryant 21:49
so we're working in conjunction with one another, and we do through the school year, the summer we're away, but through the school year we have an expo that is the first Tuesday of the month from six until nine at our location right behind North Las Vegas City Hall, which is 2280 McDaniel Street. Okay, and and the purpose of the expo is not to sell your product or service. The purpose of the expo is to expose your product and service to the community and to network, so once you know what I do, let's set up a time when you and I can sit down and talk. Let me see, let me see what your needs are, and let me see how I can help you with a solution,

Leaha Crawford 22:43
got it. Love it, love it. So it's the first Tuesday,

Brenda Bryant 22:48
first Tuesday of the month, unless it's a holiday,

Leaha Crawford 22:51
all right. And we'll have to bring them on, so we can talk about it, and we can, yeah, absolutely,

Brenda Bryant 22:54
and the anniversary is coming up, and it's gonna, the anniversary is gonna be on the 29th of August. Okay, I thought that was very nice of them to do that, because that was the day I graduated from college, and oh God, so many years ago. But anyway, it is - it's a celebration of this expo is a small business. I was there the night that they announced they were going to start the business 20 years, over 20 years ago.

Leaha Crawford 23:26
Wow, 20 years ago. Oh, wow. And it's 20 years, and

Brenda Bryant 23:30
they've been at this the whole time. They want to stay in the community, they want to make sure that this is specific to small businesses, and one of the things that I teach my students when it comes to networking is you only have to do three things, and two of them are very hard.

Leaha Crawford 23:48
What are those three things?

Brenda Bryant 23:50
First thing is introduce yourself. Hi, I'm Brenda, and my company is the Gale Group. Okay, that's the first thing. Second thing is, tell me a little about you. That's the hard part, because the third thing is shut up. Okay, and listen, because I can't tell you what my solution is to your problem, because I haven't let you tell me

Leaha Crawford 24:15
what the problem, who you

Brenda Bryant 24:16
are, and what the problem is,

Leaha Crawford 24:17
who you are and what the problem is. All right. Well, Brenda, as always, you and R, are you guys accepting new clients at the time?

Brenda Bryant 24:26
We have a new class coming up in September. Okay? And it's the English-speaking class. We have a Spanish-speaking class that will come up during the first of the year. Okay. So we do the same for it's called Biz 101 It is the same program, both in English and in Spanish. We have an instructor who handles the Spanish-speaking part. I go in and I watch them, because I don't speak any Spanish at.. well, I, the Spanish that I speak, I'm not allowed to speak in public, right? But I don't know a lot about the Spanish language, but I love. Of the energy that these people have in class, and, and the most wonderful thing about being a trainer or being an instructor is watching the lights come on when people get it.

Leaha Crawford 25:15
Wow, because, and when the light comes on, you can see in the language or not, you see the light, yeah. Well, let me ask you this, though. Is the class in person or is it virtual?

Brenda Bryant 25:25
It is in person.

Leaha Crawford 25:27
Okay.

Brenda Bryant 25:27
Again, we need to keep.. we need to build that support system.

Leaha Crawford 25:30
Build the support system

Brenda Bryant 25:31
and get to know the people around you, because the people around you may be future clients of yours. Now,

Leaha Crawford 25:38
are they just free to sign up, or

Brenda Bryant 25:41
they are free

Leaha Crawford 25:42
classes are free. Do you have a website where we can go to sign up?

Brenda Bryant 25:45
They can contact me directly.

Leaha Crawford 25:47
Okay, what's your contact information? My

Brenda Bryant 25:49
in my email address is B for Brenda, G for Gail, and Bryant, B R Y A N T at U N r.edu

Leaha Crawford 26:01

Brenda Bryant 26:03

Leaha Crawford 26:21
I appreciate that, as always, Brenda. It's been a while, but thank you. You were bombing on the show today, and we are almost ended. Julian, you got any clothes on birds?

Julian Rosado 26:30
So we're gonna, we're gonna try like a little lightning round, okay? I like this. I think we should try to all of our guests. Okay, all right, all right. So we're doing our quick question. You only got a few minutes. Come on. All right, all right. Okay, all right. So you have one answer response. Okay, all right, one word, one word responses. Okay, why were you terrible TV host the first day?

Leaha Crawford 26:59
Let's go.

Julian Rosado 27:00
All right, so leadership

Brenda Bryant 27:02
is essential. All

Julian Rosado 27:03

Brenda Bryant 27:51
anything that has Tom Hanks in it.

Julian Rosado 27:53
Oh, you see right there, yeah. Well, Brenda, again,

Leaha Crawford 27:57
